How Volume Calculates Position P&L

Volume uses a simplified P&L calculation designed to teach you the feel of leveraged positions — how time decay works, how expiration affects risk, and why position sizing matters — without requiring you to understand derivatives pricing theory.

If you're learning to trade options in the real world, you'll need to study those concepts separately. Volume gives you the intuition; the math comes later.


The Core Concept

In Volume, your position's profit or loss depends on three things:

  1. Price movement — How much the underlying has moved since you entered
  2. Time remaining — How much time is left until expiration
  3. Expiration duration — How many days you chose when opening the position

The interaction between these creates a defined-risk profile: your maximum loss is capped at your entry cost, and your maximum gain is capped based on your expiration choice.


How Time Decay Works

Real options lose value as expiration approaches — this is called "theta decay." Volume simulates this effect in a simplified way.

The intuition: When you first enter a trade, time is on your side. As expiration approaches, time decay accelerates. A position that's profitable early might become less profitable (or even unprofitable) as time runs out, even if price hasn't moved against you.

This teaches you a crucial lesson: time is a resource you spend. The longer you hold a position, the more time decay eats into your P&L.


How Expiration Affects Your Risk

When you open a position, you choose an expiration from 0 to 90 days. This choice has consequences:

The tradeoff: Shorter expirations feel more exciting (bigger swings in P&L), but they're less forgiving. Longer expirations give your thesis time to play out, but require more patience.


The Asymmetry Between Gains and Losses

Volume applies a small multiplier to losing positions: losses decay about 3% slower than gains.

Why? Two reasons:

  1. It matches real-world behavior — In real trading, losses often feel "stickier" than gains due to slippage, fees, and adverse selection
  2. It reinforces risk management — Losses are slightly harder to recover from, which teaches you to cut them quickly

This is subtle, but over many trades, it adds up. It's another reason why stop losses matter.


What This Means for Your Trading

Understanding these mechanics helps you make better decisions:

Choose expiration deliberately Don't just accept the default. Think about how long your thesis needs to play out. Day trading? Use same-day expiration. Swing trade idea? Give it a few days.

Respect time decay If a trade isn't working after 50-70% of your time has elapsed, the math starts working against you. Consider closing early rather than hoping for a last-minute reversal.

Use stop losses Your maximum loss is capped at your entry cost, but that's still a lot. A stop loss lets you define an acceptable loss that's much smaller than the maximum.

Position size matters more than you think Because expiration affects your leverage, a 10% position with a 30-day expiration behaves very differently than a 10% position expiring today. Adjust your size accordingly.

Volume's P&L calculation is a teaching tool, not a trading simulator. It captures the essential dynamics of leveraged, time-limited positions:

  • Time works against you
  • Expiration choice matters
  • Losses can accumulate quickly
  • Position sizing is critical

These lessons transfer directly to real trading, even though the specific formulas differ. Master them here, and you'll have a significant head start when you trade with real capital.
