How Volume's Trading System Works
You're Trading Real History
When you enter a session in Volume, you're not trading a simulation or generated data. You're trading actual historical market data — real price movements from real trading days.
The catch? You don't know when you are. Volume drops you at a random point in market history, and you trade forward from there. The chart you're seeing is exactly what traders saw on that day. The moves are real. The patterns are real.
This randomness is intentional. It prevents cherry-picking easy setups and forces you to develop skills that work across different market conditions — bull markets, bear markets, choppy sideways action, and everything in between.

Session Mechanics
Random Starting Points
Each new session begins at a random historical date and time. You might land in:
- A quiet premarket before a major earnings report
- The middle of a volatile trading day
- A slow afternoon drift
This unpredictability mirrors real trading — you can't choose when opportunities appear.
Time Acceleration
Real trading is slow. A full trading day takes 6.5 hours. That's not practical for learning.
Volume lets you accelerate time:
- 1x — Real-time (one second = one second)
- 2x to 600x — Speed through quiet periods
- Time Skip — Jump forward hours at a time
Use acceleration wisely. Speed through premarket if nothing's happening, but slow down when approaching key levels or managing active positions.
Market Hours
Volume respects real market hours:
- Premarket: 4:00 AM - 9:30 AM ET (no trading allowed)
- Market Hours: 9:30 AM - 4:00 PM ET (trading enabled)
- Aftermarket: 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM ET (positions auto-close)
The timeline displays in your local timezone, but the underlying schedule follows U.S. Eastern Time.
How Orders Execute
When you click "Confirm Buy," your order fills instantly at the current price. No waiting, no order book, no partial fills.
This is simpler than real trading, where:
- Market orders can slip
- Limit orders might not fill
- Large orders move the market
Volume's instant execution lets you focus on decision-making rather than order mechanics. The fills are clean so you can evaluate your strategy without noise.
Account Balance and Paper Money
Every account starts with $10,000 in paper money. This is your sandbox — lose it all, and you can reset. Make millions, and you can prove your strategy works.
Your balance tracks:
- Cash Balance — Money available for new positions
- Positions Balance — Value currently tied up in open trades
- Total P&L — Cumulative profit/loss across all trades
- Live P&L — Unrealized gain/loss on open positions
Key Differences from Real Trading
Volume is a learning tool, not a perfect simulation. Here's what's different:
| Aspect | Real Trading | Volume |
|---|---|---|
| Execution | Slippage, partial fills, order book | Instant fills at displayed price |
| Fees | Commissions, spreads, exchange fees | No fees |
| Market impact | Large orders move price | Your orders don't affect price |
| Data | Live, with latency | Historical, replayed |
| Emotions | Real money on the line | Paper money (less emotional weight) |
| Liquidity | Varies by asset and time | Always available |
Why These Differences Matter
The simplified execution means your backtested results will be slightly better than real-world results. When you trade with real money:
- Add a slippage buffer — Assume fills 0.05-0.1% worse than expected
- Account for fees — They add up, especially for frequent traders
- Start smaller — The emotional weight of real money changes everything
What Volume Teaches You
Despite the simplifications, Volume teaches the skills that actually matter:
Chart reading — You're looking at real price action, learning to recognize patterns, support, resistance, and momentum.
Risk management — Stop losses, position sizing, and expiration management work the same way. The habits you build here transfer directly.
Emotional discipline — Even with paper money, you'll feel the pull to chase, the fear of losses, the greed to hold too long. These emotions are real, and learning to manage them is the real work.
Strategy development — Volume's journal and performance tracking help you iterate on what works and abandon what doesn't.
The Bottom Line
Volume is a flight simulator for trading. The controls are simplified, but the skills are real. Use it to:
- Develop your edge
- Test your strategies across different market conditions
- Build the discipline to follow your rules
- Make your expensive mistakes with paper money
When you're ready for real markets, you'll have hundreds of simulated trades under your belt — experience that most new traders pay for in losses.
